The popular antidepressant medication, Prozac (fluoxetine), is the subject of ongoing investigations from reports of adverse effects associated with its use. Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of the medication, has taken the defense for the product in Prozac lawsuits. The company claims that the drug has an established efficacy and safety profile. However, there were several studies brought into focus in Prozac lawsuits which support patient claims of side effects such as birth defects, violence, and suicide.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, have a history of causing various side effects in patients. Prozac lawsuits are not the only instances that SSRI medications have encountered legal problems. The FDA has given several warnings to both patients and doctors about possible consequences from the medication partly in response to Prozac lawsuits.
Prozac Lawsuit Claims
Courts have reviewed over 300 Prozac lawsuit cases because of its negative and adverse effects on patients. The victims in the Prozac lawsuits have alleged that it was Prozac which caused harmful effects to their health. One of the most common issues from using Prozac is birth defects. Other Prozac lawsuits have claimed developmental disorders, such as autism, were the result of being prescribed during pregnancy.
In one Prozac lawsuit case, a SWAT team captain and police officer, Daren Alli, committed suicide after 4 days of being prescribed to Prozac. He was only suffering from mild symptoms of depression but developed complications since his body was not capable of properly metabolizing the drug. Alli’s wife commented that this was an unexpected result that was out of character for her husband. Furthermore, his wife claims that Alli would not have attempted treatment with the drug if he knew the possible consequences.
In several Prozac lawsuits, officials have claimed that Prozac manufacturers failed to warn the public about possible complications. The companies should therefore be responsible for compensating patients and families. In Prozac lawsuit hearings, many of the individuals affected by the medication have commented they would not have agreed to treatment if they were aware of the potential issues. The Prozac lawsuits have established there is a growing body of evidence regarding the issues since Prozac is easily obtained for the treatment of depression.
Prozac lawsuit claims have not been limited to the United States. In a Canadian Prozac lawsuit case, it was disclosed that Eli Lilly failed to report to the FDA about the findings of two studies about psychological instability resulting from Prozac. In this Prozac lawsuit case, it was disclosed that if the studies were presented to the FDA, health professionals would be better aware of patients’ risks.
Prozac FDA Warnings
In 2004, Prozac was issued its first warning from the FDA as a result of Prozac lawsuits. This warning, known as a black-box warning, alerted patients and health care practitioners about the possibility of suicidal behaviors and other deadly effects from the drug. This FDA warning was specifically focused on use in children and teenagers. However, there were other warnings issued since then concerning birth defects and suicidal/violent behaviors from adult and elderly patients. The warnings are the result of an accumulation of scientific studies and Prozac lawsuits that support claims of drug inefficacy and complications.
Prozac Side Effects
There are numerous scientific studies and personal accounts from Prozac lawsuits to support the claim of side effects. There is one symptom that is linked to suicide attempts and violent behavior known as akathisia. The condition solicits a feeling of restlessness in patients which will often drive patients toward unlikely behaviors.
Along with the list of psychological and physical side effects from Prozac lawsuits are Prozac-associated birth defects. Birth defects from Prozac have shown to affect families very severely. In response, Prozac lawsuits involving birth defects will often compensate families for millions of dollars in medical expenses. It was established during Prozac lawsuit cases that the damage can be life-long.
Birth defects from Prozac include:
- Septal defect
- Coarction of aorta
- Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS)
- Pulmonary stenosis
- Tetralogy of fallot
- Transposition of great arteries
