Talcum Powder Ovarian Cancer Risks Shown in New Studies
Talcum powder is most commonly marketed as a baby powder and is an extremely common household item. For decades this product has been used help heal and soothe skin, but new concerns have come to light due to the alleged link of increased risk of ovarian cancer.
New studies show that using the powder as a female hygiene product can increase the risk of ovarian cancer by 33% over those who have never used the powder products. Researchers published in Cancer Prevention Research that “genital powder use is modifiable exposure associated with small-to-moderate increases in the risk of most histologic subtypes of epithelial ovarian cancer.” Additionally, The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), classified the genital use of talc-based body powder as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.” Past studies date back to 1971 showing that although talcum powder became asbestos free, it still can increase the risk of cancer.
According to the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, the powder can actually go through the “vagina and into the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries”. There have been cases that show evidence of Talc in some of the ovarian tumors. Talc powder was originally linked to ovarian cancer because of its chemical similarity to asbestos, which has been linked to various cancers in occupational places.
Since it’s introduction to the cosmetic market women have used talcum powder after showering, using products marketed by companies like Johnson and Johnson, Luzenec America, and Rio Tinto. This use by women quickly became commonplace especially in warmer regions of the US as talc also works as an antiperspirant.
