Benicar are filing lawsuits against the drug’s maker Daiichi Sankyo because they suffered pain and disability after using the drug. Benicar is a blood pressure drug that claims to be better than other drugs for treating high blood pressure.

Benicar is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB), which means it works by relaxing the blood vessels. This decreases the pressure of the blood in the veins and allows the heart to work better. It was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002. It is one of the best selling drugs in the US and more than 11 million prescriptions are given each year by doctors.

Sprue-Like Enteropathy

Benicar, like all blood pressure drugs, has side effects. Most are mild, but some can be severe and lead to life-changing health problems. One of the most severe side effects of Benicar the risk it creates for sprue-like enteropathy.

Sprue-like enteropathy causes symptoms much like those of Celiac disease, but unlike Celiac, changes in the person’s diet do not
help. In most cases, the symptoms are life-long. Because it is tough for people with sprue-like enteropathy to absorb nutrients and keep weight on, ignored, the condition can be fatal. Many with this condition had to be placed on feeding tubes to ensure their bodies received the nutrients needed to live.

In 2012, the Mayo clinic issued a report linking Benicar to celiac-like symptoms and noted the symptoms could not be treated by standard means. When patients stopped taking Benicar, some improved but others did not. After this report, the FDA asked for more warnings to be added to Benicar’s label about the risk to users’ GI systems.

Benicar is linked to other side effects, which include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Rash
  • Hair loss
  • Chest pain
  • Swelling
  • Arthritis
  • Liver or kidney failure

Benicar Faces Legal Trouble

The maker of Benicar has landed in legal trouble many times. The company received warnings from the FDA in 2006 and 2013 due to its claims about Benicar and the risks associated with use of the drug. There have also been issues with Benicar trials. Trials were run for only three months, despite users needing to take Benicar for the rest of their lives. It is believed that had the trials been more in line with real life, the side effects of the drug might have been noted prior to the drug’s release.

Many of the people who have filed lawsuits against Benicar have suffered for years with pain and needed in-patient care. One Texas lawsuit was filed by a Benicar users who was in the hospital for more than 100 days and needed a feeding tube. Other users have been forced into years of costly treatment and have needed to visit many doctors for help in dealing with their condition.

The maker of Benicar is also accused of promoting the drug in too aggressive a manner and making misleading claims about its safety. It is also accused of failing to warn patients and doctors of the known risks of the drug.

Patients injured by Benicar use could receive money for lost wages and health care costs, as well as money that is intended to punish the drug’s maker for causing harm. There are many pending lawsuits against Benicar’s maker and more are expected to be filed in the coming months. If you or a loved one was injured and required in-patient care, or you suffered any severe side effects because of Benicar use, you might be entitled to take legal action. You should contact a lawyer as soon as possible to discuss your options.

Notwithstanding claims relating to this product, the drug/medical device remains approved by the U.S. FDA.
